Savannah State to offer Bachelor of Science in Education degrees

Three degrees added to School of Teacher Education

SAVANNAH – Savannah State University (SSU) has received approval from the University System of Georgia (USG) Board of Regents (BOR) and Georgia Professional Standards Commission to offer a degree of Bachelor of Science in Education (BSED). The anticipated start date for offering the BSED is the Fall 2016 semester.

This program, which will be housed within the School of Teacher Education (SOTE), will create a BSED degree in the areas of biology education, mathematics education, and engineering and technology education. SOTE faculty met with local and regional school systems to identify the areas of greatest need and the most up-to-date required skills for teacher preparation in STEM areas.

Marshalita Sims Peterson, Ph.D., interim dean of SOTE, remarked, “Savannah State is preparing education professionals and leaders committed to understanding and applying the most effective teaching tools and bringing forward the best in student learning.”

The teacher education preparation program already in place offers a degree in biology, mathematics, civil engineering technology or electronics engineering, with a teacher education program track. Students will graduate prepared to teach in their designated STEM field. This past May, SOTE had its first program graduate in Mathematics education.

Established in 1890, Savannah State University is the oldest public historically black college or university in Georgia and the oldest institution of higher learning in the city of Savannah.  The university’s 4,900 students select majors from 27 undergraduate and five graduate programs in three colleges — Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration and Sciences and Technology — and the School of Teacher Education.
